U.S. Customs and Border Protection has barred a young Canadian woman from crossing the border after cannabidiol oil was found in her backpack. CBD oil is a non-psychoactive cannabis product, but is a controlled substance in the U.S.

I guess i'll play the devils advocate here and state that if the signage states no cannabis, that means no cannabis. The thing people forget is that the US border is federally controlled, not state. Even if is is legal in Michigan (assuming the border crossing here), the gatekeepers (CBP) are federally run. I have a problem with people using the statement "I assumed 'X' therefore 'Y' is allowed" to justify their blind ignorance. As a Windsor resident who works in Michigan, I agree with the CBP that she should be banned for life. Just my $0.02.
It works both ways. Americans can not bring any of that to Canada either. Even some of their guns get confiscated also. At the border in BC you always see Americans hauled in. Especially the ones heading to Alaska. They figure since they are only driving through and heading for USA. That they can bring this through. But it don't work that way.

I think that the situation matters… in her situation; she used the oil to manage pain from a physical medical problem and believed it to be fine as she was traveling to somewhere where it is also legal. That's an honest mistake and she clearly didn't try to hide or smuggle it across the border. They should have just sent the lady back home and ask she come back another day without the oil in possession. Not bann her for life.. kind of intense.

What a joke. US is the biggest consumer of illegal and legal drugs in the world and they want to ban this sick ladies medication. They should loom at their own backyard.
That is terrible that the Border between the United States and Canada is so strict. It should be like the Californian/Oregon border with minimal restrictions.
The stupidity of government
There are Canadians busted for a little pot or a DUI while in US in the 70s who remain under a lifetime ban to entering US. We need to clear this us w our neighbors. It's just silly.
