By Reihan Salam As a general rule, Americans don’t give much thought to Uruguay, a small South American republic with a population of 3.3 million. But Uruguay has embarked on a new experiment with marijuana legalization that merits close attention.

It’s been an eventful year for marijuana policy. Colorado and Washington legalized recreational use of the drug in November, the Partnership at Drugfree.org revealed that over half of Americans favor decriminalization, and last week CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta apologized for “misleading the public” about the dangers of pot.

I apologize because I didn’t look hard enough, until now. I didn’t look far enough. I didn’t review papers from smaller labs in other countries doing some remarkable research, and I was too dismissive of the loud chorus of legitimate patients whose symptoms improved on cannabis.
